Re: Old Langley bug revisited in LCR3

Yup.. I've reported the same thing (although I didn't know about the CH5 output being good).

My posting got shoved into the (too big) CR3 : Feedback thread, if you want to check it out and add to the discussion..

Glad it's not just me with this problem!

Cheers,
Dean

Anyone else have this problem?
So you have a black bar on the left and right of the screen?

Me too sometimes, change the settings aspect ratio and it fixes for many days, but comes sneaking back.

I noticed Sky1 doing this the other day during advert breaks. The program was being correctly transmitted as 16:9 widescreen but when the advert break started, the screen switched to 4:3 with black bars either side for the Sky1 advert but remained like this even for widescreen adverts (which were displayed with a black bar at the top and bottom as well as either side). When the program restarted, the screen switched back to 16:9, however.

There has been a known issue which causes the STB to send the wrong aspect ratio command to your TV, which can result in you watching a 'zoomed' 4:3 letterbox picture rather than a true 16:9 picture. Once the error arises on your STB, it remains there until you reboot, or if you use Settings to set to 4:3 and then straight back to 16:9.

However what you're seeing on Sky One is, AFAIK, not an error with the STB but down to Sky deciding for whatever reason to continue to broadcast their ad-breaks in 4:3. Channel 5 often does this as well. You end up seeing a lot of ads as 4:3 letterbox because they are all recorded in 16:9 these days and many are not made available for broadcast in a 4:3 version.

Spot on Towny.

My widescreen TV does not have auto aspect-ratio switching so if you're watching, say Jake 2.0 or 24 on Sky1 and the TV is set up for "Anamorphic" then you will see the correct aspect ratio, using the tv's full resolution, but when the adverts happen (irrespective of the ratio) what is broadcast is not "Anamorphic"

Conversely, if you're watching a Grand-Prix (shot in 4:3) this is broadcast "Unanamorphically", but when the ads arrive, these are broadcast "Anamorphically".

Thre is no doubt in my mind that this is not a bug but just the way that NTL get their feeds from the different channels.

One day, everything, no matter what way they are shot, will be broadcast "Anamorphically" - Look at Scuzz for an example of this.

Almost certainly it does, but the safest way to know is when you receive the letter and handbook regarding the changes. Or, you can PM me the first half of your postcode and I can check that it is included.

Cheers

Since not every ntl customer is a member of this site, it must surely mean that there are some underlying issues affecting a number of customers.

Isn't it in ntl's interest to not only to analyse this thread, but also to delve a little deeper to establish, for instance, whether there is a specific stb model that is giving rise to the problems? Or are you able to get this from your CS systems? Is the stb model/version recorded automatically by CS? I don't recall ever being asked for that info by CS in the past - and in fact I wouldn't have known how to get the info without proppin's advice earlier in this thread.
We do get an awful lot of good feedback from our customer service teams and in other ways as well, but there are also people watching this thread and pulling out any useful pieces of information - so this feedback is definitely being used.

My question was more directed towards people with specific questions that they would like answered. We won't have answers for all of them, but we are happy to respond where we can. The problem with threads like this is that there are quite a lot of individual issues that get answered a few posts later or are discussed in detail, so it is difficult to go through this thread and pull out the unanswered queries.

Cheers
Sam

Re: [Merged] CR3-Feedback & Questions in Here Please.

Does anyone know if CR3 fixes the left-shift-and-up-a-bit problem with RGB output?

Ever since we got digital, if I turn on RGB output, I get a better picture, but it shifts noticably left and a bit up compared to composite output. I remember threads from that time blaming the stb/software, as it affected lots of makes and models of TV. Tried it again the other night (still on CR2) and it's still the same. I could adjust the TV, but I'm concerned about causing a right-shift when watching pictures from another source.

Re: [Merged] CR3-Feedback & Questions in Here Please.

Does your TV not do it with other sources? All RGB sources cause a slight shift on my TV, and mine has no adjustment.
The picture info in the R,G and B connections still relies on sync information it gets from the composite connection, some TV's allow you to adjust for sync timing, but you may well have to re-adjust for each source.

Thanks for the reply, Proppin'. The answer is I don't know, I don't have any other RGB sources! I may have a play in a week or so; trouble is, I need to get into the engineer's menus for the TV, and I know how you feel about that sort of thing
