This is a complete guess but part of the problem could be they are still working on tweaking the system which means that every once in a while and individual server carrying the user/pass details will be off-line causing the intermittant fault just for those users on that specific server.

AFAIK this won't effect people geographically so much as perhaps alphbetically or in account setup order depending how the user DB is setup.

Just a guess though as I have no idea how the system actually works.

EDIT: One other possibility is that when the window pops up asking for user/password and you are using keyboard at the time you could inadvertantly be changing the password.

Then when the server is back you are then sending the wrong pass so need to reset the account to get back to the correct one again.

Again just a theory.

Re: Email AGAIN

imap.ntlworld.com has been working fine for months now.

But then again, that's 'cause most people don't realise ntl offer imap, which is good for me

Perhaps you should have been a bit more specific with the title of the thread Russ? The present one is rather general. Something like,Russ's email problems again.

Though what are the odds it will be merged with all the other email threads?

Incog.

Re: Email AGAIN

Now 3 of my email addresses timeout!

My experience of NTL has been shocking of late. I'm surprised I've been using their services for so long. We once had all 3 services, TV, phone, internet.
Rid the TV for Sky beacuse Sky is better. Still being charged for the TV service we don't have. Enraged, rid the telephone.

I now only have the internet service from them and even that is ****e. The only reason I still have it is because BT Broadband isn't available in my area and probably won't be for another year or so.

Get it sorted NTL! Get it sorted now!

not that I am totally au fait with it all, but I understand ntl has been carrying out major work on its e-mail system this week

I'm no expert on the inner workings of OE, but that suggests there may be a problem with OE losing the settings somehow?

And before anyone says anything I'm not saying the NTL mail servers are perfect. I'm not suggesting there are no faults with NTL. I'm not implying that all NTL customers are stupid. I'm merely offering an opinion based on the above statement from Russ

Re: Email AGAIN

Russ, somebody (stuartbe? or an NTL tech?) mentioned why this is the other day in a large thread - you'll have to search for it unless somebody can remember what it was called.

You can also try

start > run > ipconfig /flushdns

this will clear your dns cahe and allow OE to search again for a working (if any server)

worth a try for the 30 seconds it will take you to do it ...

Good point - It could be dns !

Set the outlook mail server settings as bellow.....

pop - 62.253.162.50
smtp - 62.253.162.40

I wonder if using the ip instead of the dns name will help ?

I dont think it would be dns - if the server is not found then it won't ask for uid and p/w - just unable to find pop.ntlworld.com....
