well I bought 256 meg of single sided samsung pc100 the other week for 20 quid or less cant remember

I don't see any for £45, but all the £35 ones and the £55 one only have 128meg RAM, which would still be a bit skimpy. But perhaps you can use the RAM from the old machine?

I've a old p3 with 547mhz 20gig HD and 8mb gfx I was stripping for bits, in two minds wether to rob its HD and leads and psu or refit it all and sell it on with the crt.

The Crucial site could well recommend what memory is needed. Also, why not test it with PC Pitstop - it will inform you of the weakest parts of the system.
