My grandad's boiler was on the floor, so you had to lay down and hold a button in whilst pressing another - made a bang. No sign of a flame though. Ten to fifteen minutes of this and eventually you'd get a flame. Then it'd go out. So out came the screwdriver and matches. Was the same with my old boiler, only it was high on the living room wall, so a stool was needed. It's much better is the new boiler, though it's no doubt costing me a leg in electric. |
Yep it'll be costing you pennies per annum, the spark is needed only to get it to light, after that the boiler electronics kick in so that only the right amount of energy is used, no more, no less. Bottom line the whole thing is much more energy efficient. The amount of gas you use should decrease a little (although improved insulation, and efficeincy control additions such as thermostatic radiators valves will make a bigger difference), whilst any changes in electricity consumption will be very marginal. After all your old boiler system will have had power for the controls anyway.
However this whole idea of spending small fortunes on modern condensing boilers is a bit silly. The energy savings on condensing boilers come from them running at a set temperature, for long periods whereby the flues gasses are at a temperature that heat in the gas gets recovered. Most domestic systems, especially if the boiler is replaced, but radiators are not resized, will not be running at this optimium level.

I imagine the fan uses the most electric. There are no radiators - no room for them. Just a gas fire in the living room and a gas heater in the bedroom that doesn't work. 
I've changed the tap washers before - no probs. And the taps were working fine afterwards. I think it's just the age of the taps - not in very good condition.
