Re: just did a speed test..

I have been experiencing some really slow speeds as of late. I have even had speeds of less than a 1mb service. So back to tech support with our Indian friends. Did all the usual checks firewall, anti virus, router etc.. but still didnt resolve my issue. SO after 20 minutes on the phone with this guy I said can you pass me through to CS where he replied "Go cancel your service then!" (Not bad as I never mentioned cancelling!!!)

Anyways after a short call to CS based at Belshill, I then proceeded to call tech support again and at last got through to the Swansea CC. The advisor there was excellent and pointed out that my Ambit 120 had rebooted itself 250 times in the past month. He then decided that obviously there was a fault with the modem and booked an engineer to replace it next week on Friday.

Why couldn't the Indian call centres have done that originally? Instead they made excuse after excuse and had me call them back 10 times over the past 3 weeks.

Anyway I got the result I wanted and hopefuly the new 250 modem will be an excellent replacement.

Re: just did a speed test..

but is my NIC card the problem seeing as someone suggested changing the settings to 100mb and i dont have that option, as i said its 10mb in half or full duplex or should i still be able to get the 10mb connection with this card.

i dont mind buying another NIC to try it out IF there is a good chance of it fixing the problem

to get the full 10meg you need a 10/100 Mb/s network card - the good news is that they are readily available and cheap - should be less than a tenner even from places like PC World & Maplins.

Re: just did a speed test..

ok im back!

new card is in and i have set it to 100mb in deivice manager, i now get

2005-12-30 11:32:48 EST: 7964 / 492
Your download speed : 7964 kbps or 995.6 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 492 kbps or 61.5 KB/sec.

so it is going faster!

someone said change the modem speed also, do i do that from http://192.168.100.1/ or do i have to get NTL to do it for me?

looks like the NIC is ok, you can check your modem ethernet settings from the web interface, but if it is set to 'autosense', personally I would leave it at that. Similarly I would set the NIC to 'full autonegotiation' - but it's up to you.

If it is still 'slow' after that, then it is possible your area is still needing some tweaks to the network, but nearly 8meg is better than you were getting

Re: just did a speed test..

im not sure i have 'full autonegotiation' in the options.. it goes like this

10 half
10full
100half
100full
auto

so auto is ok ?

---------- Post added at 17:45 ---------- Previous post was at 17:34 ----------

to add to my last post,

i chaged the settings to auto on the NIC and modem to autosence then re did the speed tests, the test results were just over 6000 kbps, so a slight drop, i changed it back to 100 half for both and its back upto the 8000 kbps mark.

Leave it in autonegotiate and it should attempt to connect the fastest it can, which from the PC to the router or modem should be 100M, its only 1,2 or 10M from the modem back to NTL.

BTW half duplex only allows data one way at a time, be it transmit or receive, full duplex allows both simulateously [supposedly], so the figures you get may be slightly higher but try streaming up and down at same time to check results.
