But he was asking about companies cheaper than Apple. This would infer he wanted to buy his accessories somewhere other than Apple

Are you able to put the nano into "Disk Mode" using Itunes and drag them across with windows explorer?
If not you might need to use the method that people use to transfer music back to their machines, try something like copypod photo http://www.copypodphoto.net/ (there are probably countless free alternatives)

The pictures appear in Windows Explorer in .ithmb file format and I can't view them - seems like the only software I can find to read them is for a Mac.

That's really odd - thanks for the recommendadtion, it seems to be what I'm looking for but when I plug the Ipod in, the photo 'albums' are listed in the corner but when I click on them, nothing appears in the window display where the pictures should be - and when I make a backup of them on my pc, the folder is there but appears to be empty

including 20 hidden directories of music files.
You will not be able to continue with EphPod unless you
build this directory structure.

Beneath that is an option to 'build directory structure' but when I do that I get a message saying "cannot create:\Ipod_Control":
I have a feeling these pictures are gone for good
edit: actually ephpod doesn't seem to have an option for pictures

You using XP?
---------- Post added at 10:47 ---------- Previous post was at 10:41 ----------
Try this (Make sure that Explorer is set to show hidden files & folders)
1) Open up the Nano in My Computer.
2) Delete the hidden folder "ipod_control" (if you don't see it, make sure you have viewing of hidden folders turned on in Tools>Folder Options on the View tab)
3) Start EphPod, it will (should) be able to recreate the directory structure now.
