If the WD tools allow you to wipe the Raptor completely, I would do that first - a clean slate. If you have already deleted the partitions on the Raptor, I don't think you can get into recovery console - there is no XP install for you to login to!

Ok, will try the wipe from the WD disk.

Did I mean recovery console?

Isn't there a way to access fixmbr and fixboot from the setup CD?

That's what I was thinking of.

IIRC, the only thing you can do during the setup is re-partition a disk and install to a new/existing partition. Both of those will have to update the MBR and partition table.

Re: [Merged] RAID Array and XP questions

Ok, I sorted it out eventually.

The WD disk I made didn't work when I got it home

I booted to the Windows setup CD and ran the recovery console. The repair tools are still available even thought there is no windows installation.

Chkdsk showed unrepairable errors on C:\ but a chkdsk/r sorted that.

Anyway, I discovered that for some reason, setup wanted to write the setup files to one of the array disks which I hadn't noticed before.

So I disconnected the array disks and setup ran perfectly.

I have no idea whether the Raptor needed that chkdsk/r or not.

Anyway, job done
