Just had a look at U3 - don't understand it....

Why not just use Portable Apps on a standard USB flash drive?

I don't see the advangate - I must be missing something or I've just seen through it as a marketing gimmick?

Re: FTP software

The main advantage is that it's all integrated. You have a U3 launch app loaded automatically by XP, which allows you to load any of the U3 apps, upgrade them, delete them etc. I'm sure you could so it yourself but I don't think it adds much (if anything) to the cost and it's easy!

At the mo, mine has Firefox, Filezilla, Putty, a text editor, Skype, a cut down Avast for the disk, a password manager and Cruzersync. If I wanted I could also add TBird & OpenOffice.
