worth checking, though - you might like to try the tweak test in the article I linked to on Robin Walkers superb site, to see?

Re: Very Poor 2mb Broadband via Set-top Box

I downloaded something called "TCPOptimizer.exe" ... and ran the Optimise option. This amended my MTU and RWIN - which were VERY low (500 and something) up to 1500 (MTU) and then re-ran some speed tests (the Robin Walker tests and the ADSLGuide speed test) ... both of these now show a 2mb connection ... whereas it was showing 400k.

Just ran the same tests on the PC downstairs - so I'm going to compare the results.

The website I got it from was :

http://www.speedguide.net/tcpoptimizer.php

Some more information from a test I just did (after amending my settings to match those of the other PC) :

1. Your Tweakable Settings:
Receive Window (RWIN): 256960
Window Scaling: 2
Path MTU Discovery: ON
RFC1323 Window Scaling: ON
RFC1323 Time Stamping: ON
Selective Acks: ON
MSS requested: 1460
TTL: (less any hops behind firewall) 127
TTL remaining: 118
TOS/TOS subfield: 0
TOS/Flags:

2. Test 1024001 byte download
Actual data bytes sent: 1040061
Actual data packets: 714
Max packet sent (MTU): 1500
Max packet recd (MTU): 1500
Retransmitted data packets: 11
sacks you sent: 170
pushed data pkts: 99
data transmit time: 5.456 secs
our max idletime: 464.9 ms
transfer rate: 167353 bytes/sec
transfer rate: 1338 kbits/sec
This is not a speed test!
transfer efficiency: 98%

3. ICMP (ping) check
Minimum ping: 78.64 ms
Maximum ping: 89.46 ms
Ping stability:
82.37 83.27 88.42 80.43 89.46 83.60 80.28 86.44 79.43 78.64

These results all came from the following test :

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Having run the test and looking at the results, you have to select you "Service" (which I selected "cable"), Your advertised speed (kbit/s) (which I selected "2000"), your operating system (Mines XP Pro) and Connection (I chose "Normal")

The results above are almost exactly the same on both ours PC's now.

Re: Very Poor 2mb Broadband via Set-top Box

Just a few more results :

From Robin Walkers on-line speed test :

1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 532 ms = 246376 Bytes/sec = approx 2050 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec

And from ADSLGuide :

Downstream1833 Kbps (229.1 KB/sec)1979 Kbps (inc. overheads)Upstream187 Kbps (23.4 KB/sec)201 Kbps (inc. overheads)

So I THINK I've sorted it myself.

Homealone - thankyou for the link to Robins "Tweeks" section ... that's how I found all this stuff.
