I have never threatened to leave to get a discount. Being out of contract and willing to enter a new minimum period are your bargaining tools.

Everyone if effectively 'out of contract' and free to leave when they announce a price rise. Bet they forget to advise that in their 'we're simplifying your charges' letter.

Same thing I never threaten to leave I just ask for a better deal and they always come up with a good price

Not true. You are free to leave within 30 days but remain within any minimum contract period should you decide to stay.
