I realise that. I also realise that the booth operators would probably not have had access to the DVLA database so would be unable to look it up. I just included that as an example of technology not necessarily being better than humans. In the case of the Dartford Crossing, as you say, anyone with a car not registered in this country would have to pay at the booth.

you pay as you use it, you only have to pay for the return journey
if you are going back the way you came.
