Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
Siruis, its nothing to do with a Tory rant.
I have been to these festive occasions up in London. And yes, you cannot move. Its all about having a good time.
Big thing though, like most cities that are charging, l believe that Edinburgh has guest bands.
London dont have that. Its just fireworks - thats it.
What is making me laugh, is the fact tht they are saying - we wont make any money, Dont make me laugh.

Do you think that the extra police, cleaners, public transport staff, etc. don't need paying?

£10 ?
Seems fair to me to watch a fantastic display.
If you dont like it and want to be scrooge, watch it on TV.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
If there's money to be made. then people will charge.
if people will pay. then people will charge.
if it used to be free. then charge for it.
it would be interesting if we could have a sort of documentary about things like this. we see the money get bagged up and see what they do with it.
pay the cleaners. they were due to be paid as normal anyway at the end of the week.
pay the police. if you pay them there will be none left to pay the cleaners.
pay the volunteers. they work for free.
it'll probably just end up being used to pay for dinners, wine and taxi's at the end of the program.
Who paid for the fireworks we'll all be asking.
probably sponsors.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
When my son was in University in Swansea he lived not far from where they would hold fireworks on new year and guy fawlkes. He was informed the last year he lived in student accomedation that the Council were considering charging people who lived within a certain distance of the ground for the privilage of watching the fireworks even though you may not want to participate. I dont know if they tried implimenting it or what happened but this was around 2006.

That'll be a bit like getting everybody to recycle and make it fun and exciting.
and then making it compulsory and have to pay for it now.
or like the council man walking down your street everyday between the hours of 9 and 11am singing Justin Bieber songs for the last 2 years for free.
and now telling people they've got to start paying him now because you're able to hear him from your house.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
As long as it currently funded by London and will continue to be funded by London, then I couldn't give a toss how they finance it.

Exactly.
a lot of people couldn't even give a toss about London itself.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
I went to see the Millenuim firework display, and to be honest the display hasn't changed much.
Its a total rip off Boris, to charge for it. I look at several ways that this can be paid for - we get charged for the Congestion Charge, which doesn't change about the way traffic use central London
And the other way is the amount Westminster Council make out of Parking, and traffic fines in London.
Total rip off.

Re: New Year Revellers Face London Fireworks Charge
It's because people just accept it Arthur. they will carry on charging for everything as long as you have people who say it's only a couple of quid so stop moaning.
we have become a society of anything and everything will be charged for. will be doubled in price. will keep rising. and will be paid accordingly.
the day will soon come when we will willingly pay to walk the streets.
double rates for daylight hours.
