I used to love his band, god dam sicko should be released in to a normal wing in the prison and officers should turn a blind eye.

The last bit about the celebrity status meaning he got away with it for a long time is not quite so far fetched. Look at Saville, Rolf Harris, Stuart Hall.
Slightly connected with this, was Gary Glitter so arrogant that he thought he would never get arrested when he took his PC for repair and they found the images, or did he have some sort of conscience and wanted the porn found? Interesting question that has had me wondering for a while.

He probably didn't think it through and thought the PC was "dead" and no data was recoverable.

Two men arrested after paedophile Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins died in prison attack
Watkins, 48, was serving a 29-year jail term for multiple sexual offences, including serious crimes against young children and babies at HMP Wakefield, in West Yorkshire.
He was attacked with a knife on Saturday morning, sources confirmed.
West Yorkshire Police said two men, aged 25 and 43, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are in police custody.
