You are correct. This is from the Samsung UE40D6530 manual, which I had handy.

A quick Google suggests this behaviour is very common.

I have a Panasonic G20 plasma which won't pass through Dolby Digital from the STB over HDMI to the home theatre system over HDMI or optical, necessitating a direct optical connection from the STB to the home theatre system.
