that was in firefox just now, you have to bear in mind that flash and firefox updates were released at the same time, and it could be either causing the issues

Yeah, but why? Firefox is its add-ons. Without add-ons I would not want Firefox.

It could tell you where the problem lies, so you could more easily determine if there is a fix?

Tried it just now, but of course you have to keep some plug-ins available for speed testers to work.

Anyway, it made no difference. Probably the problem is with flash or Java anyway.

Re: Firefox misreporting speed tests?

I now have a temporary fix for this problem.

The cause is the most recent Flash update. By configuring it to run in unprotected mode the problem disappears.

This is done in Windows 7 (64 bit) by locating and opening the mms.cfg file in Notepad. (Run Notepad as administrator) C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash . Add "ProtectedMode = 0" to the third command line and save.

Having done this, all Flash-based speed tests run normally. I get 104Mb download as before. BTW Speedtest.net-London-NAMESCO is no longer listed. This one works pretty well. speedtest.net-London- Virtual Internet

I am told by the guys at Bugzilla@mozilla that the issue has only affected Firefox on some machines because Firefox runs Flash as a pure plugin not as Active X.

Hopefully now Mozilla can now issue a permanent fix to the problem. Obviously we can't have Flash running in unprotected mode as a permanent solution.

This issue seems to be patchy in its effect across different people's machines. The problems with the Flash update and playing Youtube videos in Firefox is not one I had, but others did.

Anyway the Bugzilla techies have thanked me for helping narrow the problem with Flash speed tests that SOME of us have had in Firefox 13+. They have now submitted a report to the Adobe bug tracker.

Re: Firefox misreporting speed tests?

Flash has been patchy for me recently although the speed tests have been fine.

Maybe applying the fix described above will help.

Read this for further guidance.

I looked at the fix before but the odd thing is I don't have that file in that directory even though flash is definitely running in protected mode. Ill have to do some more research to sort it out.

What version of Windows are you running? I'm running W7 (64 bit) The required file is in a different directory C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

I carried out the suggested fix and all worked correctly again
The file is there but might only show as 'mms' without the file extension.
