Re: Free ESPN for a month
Has anyone who didn't previously have ESPN added it to their package on the back of the free month? I noticed their viewing figures on BARB aren't that fantastic in January, even though the channel was free to 3.7 millions Virgin customers during this period.
02nd Jan to 08th Jan - 392,000
09th Jan to 15th Jan - 644,000
16th Jan to 22nd Jan - 516,000
Surprisingly the viewing figures aren't massively better than this time last year when the channel wasn't being served up free.
03rd Jan to 09th Jan - 402,000
10th Jan to 16th Jan - 356,000
17th Jan to 23rd Jan - 405,000
Are ESPN struggling for subscribers? I wonder how many of their viewers are from people getting the channel for free from Virgin on XL package, Smallword Ultimate HD package, BT Vision TV unlimited etc....
I wonder how long these "SKY Sports add on channels" can last. Rumours are rife that BoxNation might not even see 2013.

Then the best thing is to get rid of it.

Way too much foreign football! I get the impression they still don't know their own identity in the UK yet, or fully understand what their UK audience want. Even their British football rights suck. They don't get first pick of the SPL games, don't get first pick of the Premiership games and don't get first pick of the FA cup ties either. I'm sure they do get a 50/50 pick of Europa League ties.
ESPN seem happy to be a second class sports channel who will forever be in the shadow of SKY Sports.

And they could well return when the next rights come up for renewal.

l think most of us have been saying this for a while Chad as they always seem to want to pick up sports rights for next to nothing or bid for the weakest package.

I agree Chad , I'd like to see more PL games going from 23 to at least 46 with a better variety of sport why not get more boxing , NRL (RL) , they didn't bid on Super league rugby What about NFL a sport they no inside out surely they could compete with Sky for this.

I for one am hopping that ESPN do compete with Sky for the NFL TV rights this summer, they have great companion programming in Sunday NFL countdown and Monday night NFL Countdown currently shown on ESPN America. IMO they would improve upon the good coverage offered by Sky.
