Meanwhile, sadly, my jitter has gone from good (6ms) pre-recent outage, to bad (52ms) post-outage. Makes playing games online a royal pain in the behind.

Now on 100Mb I am getting between 3ms and 13ms

Yet downstream performance is all over the place and at peak its barely at half speed if that. Whilst a month and especially 2 months ago my jitter was all over the place but download speeds were pretty stable. Whenever my download speeds drop, sometimes my tbb graph looks completely normal, other times it shows an increase in latency but not huge amounts.

Are you using a wired or wireless connection?

On wired I actually have seen issues like this just caused by a faulty NIC.

Looking at mine would

a) be pointless because there is an accepted outstanding fault
b) doubtless wind me up and I don't really want to be tempted into taking ADSL again because the line fault on that would doubtless wind me up even more. I must admit I've already checked out Be's pricing and it's very tempting.

Hmm yes. I did used to use BE until my phone line started having serious issues, and their customer service is excellent, as well as the forum community, and well, got a very good stable connection with them, along with a static IP address (you can purchase more).

It's just a shame that their prices have increased recently.

there is no latency/speed issues on my network.

Incidently when I posted my jitter wasnt too bad it started getting quite worse although the superhub is plugged in now so I am seeing the real picture.

To answer your question but you on the wrong path.

Gigabit wired connection over cat6, nic is a intel pci-e.

As I have a short line I'd get ~ 18Mbps if the fault was fixed. Even with it I was getting > 16Mbps but the phone itself was unusable because of noise from an HR disconnect fault.

I currently have 10Mbps + Vonage which costs £27 for 10Mbps with anytime calls.

If I went the Be route it would be £17 + £14 = £31 for 18Mbps + anytime calls and no STM.

I'd order Be today if it weren't for the dodgy phone line. I could stick with Vonage which would make it £17 + £10 + £6 = £33 That would sort out the phone problem but the ADSL may still be unstable. If I wait then eventually Infinity will arrive which with luck will bypass the dodgy joint and there will be plenty of feedback on whether BT are better with that than they are with ADSL.

You can defeat the P2P and newsgroup throttling with a combination of techniques. On newsgroups make sure you have an SSL encrypted connection to the server, preferably not on the default port (port 443 is a good). Make sure protocol encryption is enabled for BitTorrent and eMule.

The second technique is to open more connections. VM's throttling isn't very effective when you have many, many connections. With newsgroups experiment by increasing the number of connections until you can saturate your line 24/7.

Unfortunately this all creates far worse network issues for VM and other uses, including reduced bandwidth, increased latency and increased jitter. Like many other ISPs Virgin appears to have found that the more they fight the worse it gets, so recently have tried adding more bandwidth instead which seems to be working much better.

Hmm yes. I know Roger's cable in Canada actually limits all encrypted traffic to 100KB/s, along with other techniques which make it pretty much impossible to get reasonable speeds out of torrents.

So presumably video calls via Skype or Facetime are impossible. VPN access for people trying to work at home will be ridiculously slow too. Their customers must love that.

I am moving towards doing everything encrypted. All Google services are available on SSL, for example, so I chew a lot of bandwidth when uploading backup files to my account. Everything is moving in that direction so merely retarding encrypted traffic is unlikely to be a viable option in the near future.

Not a clue, but I've noticed they like to randomly terminate SSL connections.
