Obviously, I can't speak for the paths down where you live. My experiences are from riding around here, as well as doing a number of multi-day trips where we rode around 150 miles in a couple of days and basically needed to go from A to B. In my experience, some paths are great, and some are horrible. Some also don't go where you need to go. I think things are getting better, but there still is a lot of room for improvement. The reality is that with some paths, you're better off than on them.

Agreed, even if they're just pavements marked as shared cycle/foot, it is easier than them being on the road, especially if they have done the usual trick which happens round here of narrowing the carriageway with central refuges and hatching which makes it harder to pass.

Do they still have that path on Castle Boulevard coming out of the centre of N'ham? The one with the big trees in the middle...

yes... sadly. but they also laned off part of the carriageway too, conveniently zig-zagged to avoid parking bays. GSV it.

Not any more, I'll be driving further & hence causing more emissions because of this...

The Crescent in Salford, from the University and carrying on to parts of Chapple Street. They must be mad.

Re: Fined for NOT riding in the Bike Lanes
I cycle to work and use a mix of road and cycle path.
There is one area where I choose to use the road rather than the adjacent cycle path, and for two reasons: it's on the opposite side of the road, and it would require me to stop at every junction and give way to traffic getting on/off the main road. I need to maintain my rhythm, so stay where that traffic has to give way to me.

I tend to wear the cycle shorts that have got industrial strength padding. It would take about 50 pairs of speedos to provide the same amount of cushioning.

That reminds me of the joke about the man who put a clean pair of underpants on every day...

Watching budgie smuggler wearing macho cycle riders could have that effect though.
