oh god, dont start a mass panic! if they are remoting to the computer, disable remote desktop connections, and make sure there is no VNC software installed

I don't see the need to change IP's? what is it you think they did ?

When I used to play halo 3 I would get hit offline (ddos) and being able to change my ip was the only way to be able to stop it. if I couldent change my ip people would be able to hold me offline for aslong as they want.
If i couldn't change my ip I would have to change isp, im hoping that vm will start giving out modems out again.

Just turn off uPNP, the router will act just as good as any firewall..

needs to be a lot longer then that probably at least 72 hours.

Worth looking at the lease time and trying around the time it expires ? leave it off for 24 hours from then ?

Re: is it possible to change my ip?

Your Hub is provided with a 7 day IP lease, you will not likely get a new lease unless your area has a large number of IP addresses allocated to other uses, where it is more likely that a lower volume of available addresses could mean that your current IP address is assigned to a different device at the end of said lease.

If you had a standard 50Mb modem, not a Hub or Superhub, changing the MAC address of the ethernet device the modem is connected to will result in a new IP address as these are paired together, I believe there is a limit of 4 IP addresses maximum per 24 hour per modem

If you are on a local network with a low ratio of devices compared to a high number of available IP addresses, then it is likely you will keep the same address.

To get a new IP address your Hub will need to be removed from the local CMTS which should result in your current address lease expiring, and then placed back onto the network.

1st line technical support cannot do this, it has to be done by 2nd/3rd line agents who have access to the CMTS and can remove your device. The other option is to have your connection suspended for a minimum of 24 hours. This should result in your device being taken off the network, and assuming that the IP address is assigned to another user, you may then get a new address when your modem is unlocked and placed back onto the CMTS.

In short, your chances of getting a new address are pretty slim at this stage.

7 day lease ? you sure ?

The rest is spot on .. 2nd line can delete you, but as it messes with the CMTS stats its not something they are likely to do.

yeah, it seems I think VM use 1 week lease's.

Remaining Lease Time
5 days 15:50:45

thats what ddwrt is showing me for current WAN ip. So is luck but in worst case would need to be a week, or use it for week but turn of when due to expire.

Re: is it possible to change my ip?

Off course you may go through the leaving the modem off for 24 hours and when you switch your modem back on it is seen by the Virginmedia DHCP server which still has your original ip still unallocated so it might just reallocate it to your MAC address again.
