Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

Snoopz thanks for that little hint as I run sidebar as well with weather and currency app on it and was driving me crazy.

Havent had many issues with Avast myself other then the always having to keep it in Silent/Gaming mode as it just bloody annoys the hell outta me when Avast says "Avast has been Updated"

Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

Decided to ditch Avast and use Comodo, I already use their Firewall so re-installed with their AV this time. So far no blocked http traffic!

Mine doesn't do that. Then again, I configured mine by going into settings>updates (details) and turning notifications off when updating.
I also went into settings>sounds and turned voice sounds off.

Try it and see if that solves the problem for you.

Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

I upgraded to this from v. 4.7? a couple of weeks ago and the only issue I've been having is that IE8 seems to have problems from time to time and be forced to close. Fingers crossed I don't have any more serious issues....

It's odd because quite some time ago I tried to update to a newer version v. 5 possibly and the process eventually aborted as, IIRC, it appeared my very low spec system (512mb ram, Intel Celeron 3ghz, XP SP3) didn't meet its requirements. For that reason I never bothered trying again thinking it'd be a waste of time. In fact, the recent upgrade only happened when I received notification that my current version was out of date and although I was just trying to obtain a new licence as I've done many times before, I somehow wound up unintentionally upgrading to v. 6. I'm still not sure whether I selected a wrong option somewhere at the time or whether the upgrade was automatic, perhaps because my current version was so out of date and no longer supported, but I'd be interested if anyone could shed any light on this.

Anyway, what I have noticed is the website rating indicator which pops up when Google searching for example. Is this of any real value in identifying 'dodgy' sites or is it just another of those gimmicks designed to make a visual impression?

TVM as always.

Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

yep 4.7 is no longer supported so when you tried to renew the licence you will have had to update .... you would have had to click a radio button for this to happen ... but you probably just clicked it thinking that you were confirming your licence renewal .... when an upgrade is selected avast will always update to the latest version (even if the site displays an older version ..... newer versions are uploaded before the site gets altered to reflect this newer version)

latest version of avast free (program) is 6.0.1000
latest virus engine and definition file is 110405-1 (although this is updated (to a newer version) 1 or more times per day)

Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

Errrmmm i think an update today has gone really wrong.

It seems to be blocking any sites with any sort of Social networking. Everytime i go onto Facebook, Ladslads, Gaydar or Twitter avast blocks them. It even blocks the facebook like applet on the homepage that incredimail sets. When u try and get on then it says that Avast is blocking them because its a trojan horse threat.

Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

Yeah I got the same...

Hopefully they will unbreak shortly.

And when you try to update the program returns a 403 error...

Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

strange how u all visit gaydar :-x lol

I sorted it...
What i did was a system restore and then it updated again and now it seems ok, i can get on the sites although access to them seems very sluggish... ALSO!! it was blocking other antivirus sites, wouldnt allow access to symantec or AVast or their forums.

I thought i had a virus and was going mad because im always so careful about what i visit because i do online banking etc. I run Spybot, Malwarebytes and Combofix and found nothing so i think im clean.

Just rx'd the latest updates, and all seems to be OK again - must have been a previous duff update causing false positives.

Re: Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0

I was on the verge of going back to AVG

'Panic mode had been engaged' - lol

Like you say the one update last night seemed to cause the problems and was fixed a couple of hours after.
