You forgot one thing. We can all make mistakes, no matter how knowledagble and/or experienced we are.

I have been using Computers all my adult life. I have a degree in a computing related subject. I also work in a position where we get to deal with viruses fairly regularly. I am not trying to browbeat you with my qualifications, just trying to make the point that I know my stuff about computing in general, and have a fairly good knowledge of security.

My PC at home still got a virus, because I made a mistake.

I would say this is bad advice. They would have probably connected via a router which has its own built in firewall to block ports other than 80 for web browsing, unless you are a gamer.

I remember in dial up days being infected within minutes of connecting a clean machine with only visiting a few legit sites (news, sports etc).
Prob the same in plugging your PC direct into your VM modem without a router.

My VPN router logs indicate I get about 50-100 hits a week and all I do is view a few techy websites and the UK newspaper websites.
