It was one of the many changes introduced in the post-9/11 shake-up.

Re: Banned for life from the USA
I would like to see a full transcript of the mail.
As calling Obama a prick, I assume it was prick, I don't think is enough to warrant a ban.
Hell, if it had been GWB in power, half the world would be banned.

This would be entirely at the discretion of the UK government whether or not they wished to do this. Banning someone from your country is an entirely unilateral decision regardless of special relationships. The UK police were purely following a request from the US.
If we banned a US citizen from the UK they would have a choice whether to object or not and take it up with their government. Given this UK citizen doesn't care and has shown no interesting in taking it up with our government that's about it.
Nothing to do with special relationships at all.

Re: Banned for life from the USA
Is it really a bad thing to be banned for life from going to the USA.
I was going to go the the US but the amount of paperwork they want is a joke, I've filled out less getting MoD security clearance, and that didn't cost over £10.
Whats next, providing a stool sample?

It's not that much paperwork although I agree it's an irritant. Being banned from the US is a bad thing, that's a rather large place to suddenly be unable to ever visit or work in.

Maybe we should all send em one anyway and tell them to count the peanuts.
Mind you there are enough stupid people over there already so I guess they didn't want another. If anything hopefully this will teach the lad to grow up a bit.
