Re: Oversubscription?
Depends as you may still use the DOCSIS 1.0 network if you upgrade to 20Mb, I would say upgrading to 50Mb might be ok as you would be on the DOCSIS 3.0, but you could face the same issues as you are living in a high student area, I will check the usage in your area tbh I would say its going to be the wait game for you but let me check first.

As broadbandings has said I will say this 50Mb doesn't effect the lower tiers as it uses DOCSIS 3.0 NOT DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 which the other tiers use, it can be many issues, have you rung in yet to get them to check?
|
I did ring but got a pointless reply such as have I rebooted my modem & all that stuff. If I get fairly consistent high speed all day it's obviously not my equipment I would have thought.
here's my speed test right now, come tonight it will be less than 4.
I should point out that I am a silver surfer & rarely download anything that might get me capped

Re: Oversubscription?
Hi, Broadbandking - can I ask - is there anyway for you to say if 50mb in the G3 area of Glasgow is likely to be ok ?
I'd be happy to move up if I thought it would solve my problems. Just as 10 and 20mb don't get me much above 1.5 mb most of the time you'll understand my reluctance to fork over the extra for 50.
I did ask the engineer when he was out on Wed how 50mb was going and he said it seemed ok - but, he may have been unwilling to say otherwise (offiical job hat on and all that) - as im right next to Glasgow Uni and this is student central I can well belive contention problems .... just not much help to me on my, what feels like dodgy dial up connection.
Have an engineer coming out again tomorrow (Sat) morning so will report back how things go.

Re: Oversubscription?
Thanks, broadbandking, it's much appreciated. I've had to deal with a few slow speed issues at work today myself and I've just been like "yeah, know how you feel!"

They best thing I can advise is try it and then if its crap then downgrade again as you will have a right to cancel.

Re: Oversubscription?
Just had the engineers out - ubrs is oversubscribed 99% utilisation - nothing they can do.
Has been escalated, but they weren't holding out much hope of it being fixed anytime soon - person they phoned at the ubrs end of things jokingy advised them to tell me to get another provider.
Some folk would be jumping, but I'm actually glad to at least know the problem - on hold to retentions now , see if i can cut a deal for reduced price or 50mb or something

Re: Oversubscription?
I wouldn't get your hopes up, Lobey. I've been told that VM won't budge on price. There's been a VM van round here a few times recently and it's always parked at the nearest connection cabinet so they may be working on the issue. Either that or packing more subscribers on to the network. I'm leaning towards the former though as my service seems to have improved somewhat (3-4mbps last night and this afternoon) so fingers crossed!

Re: Oversubscription?
I have exactly the same issue with speed here in Nuneaton (CV11 6FU) ever since I was upgraded to 10Meg, I am getting speeds less than 2 Meg. In fact when I was on 2 Meg, it was consistently 1.9+
Called a couple of weeks ago and went through all the standard diagnostics to no event; was told an engineer would be called but I'm still waiting!
I have been trying to call VM again today but all I have been getting all day is "Sorry, we are too busy" followed by NU tone!
Come back 2 Meg!

Re: Oversubscription?
Well I'm going to have 50Mb fitted - £39 a month- everyone swears blind it will be on diff UBRS, so we will see.
As I can't get time of work and will be away first week in Nov, it should go in on Sat 14th so will report back then how it turns out.
Oh and meanwhile I've had my current bill dropped to £34 a month so ... meh
Looks like I have 2 weeks of mainly 1mb and below service...

Lobey, it seems to be VM policy to no longer address oversubscription and has been for at least a year now. Their new way of addressing the problem is to wait until people get so sick and tired of dire speeds that they upgrade to 50mb. It's appalling but they are getting away with it and don't seem to give a damn.

Re: Oversubscription?
Just change isps. My speed is crap at certain points of day and the evening and then it jumps back to full speed. I'd say that they were traffic shaping without a doubt. I have 10 megs and it drops to under at the fastest during the day. I have emailed, called etc and what do they say ? Blah Blah Blah its other users on the system. I gave up but i will not be conned into 50megs by them, because after a while 50 megs will suffer the same problem. And to be honest.. lol... How many servers in the UK have a 100 meg line and actually put that out..

Re: Oversubscription?
Problem is that changing provider would mean getting a BT line in and I can't stand that particular company - doesn't matter who your ADSL is off it's through a BT line
And when it isn't being oversubscribed cable is so far above ADSL it isn't funny - if Virgin had some real competition then we might see more action, till then i'll see what I can coax out of them .. squeaky wheel gets the oil and all that.

Had a similar problem, everything looks ok but isn't. Was told UBR was under-subscribed (699 out of a capacity of 1200). CS suggested that as my modem was old(6yrs) it would be replaced. It arrived two days later(last Thursday). Since then for 98+% of the time I get the full 10Mb. My SNR went from 26dB to 41dB, just with a change of modem.
