Re: internet timing out

Coming here and insulting VM technical support staff isn't going to win you any supporters, and it's likely to alienate the only people other than those you've been speaking to on the phone that might be able to help you get this resolved.

I gave VM a call to let them know that I was considering this, and was offered a much improved deal to my current one.

Included in that deal was a wireless router which arrived yesterday.

In the course of my investigations into what was going on with my connection, I discovered that there is a known compatibility problem between Windows Vista and some USB devices, including modems and routers. This is something to do with the default settings in Vista's Power Plans, which send spurious signals to USB devices causing them to disconnect or reset periodically.

So, if you are having intermittant disconnect problems, ask yourself these questions: 1) Do I use Vista as my operating system, and 2) Is my modem/router connected to my computer via USB?

If the answer to both of these question are Yes, the solution may be as simple as changing your connector cable from USB to ethernet. I had to do that yesterday when installing my new wireless router. To test things out, I set some downloads running last night before I went to bed. When I checked this morning, they were still running away quite happily.

I'm actually beginning to think that my problem is solved (knock on wood).
I run XP and use ethernet. Next please?

Angry Re: internet timing out

Getting exactly the same in Bristol, was issued a new modem (Ambit 256) which didn't resolve the issue. The problem started to occur around a week ago, modem will be fine for all of five mins then the 'ready' light drops out like the modem is rebooting, then nothing for about a min or two.. then back up for five -drops- rinse and repeat.
Rang VM CS again and reported my problem, went through the usual stuff, no luck. Their sending out a tech to me tomorrow morning so hopefully i can get this resolved, will post back with what happ'd, hopefully fixed and can help others with it.
- KFK.

Sidenote ~ I was on the modem config page with one of the times it happend, the frequency for downstream hit something around 850****** when the modem burped o_o? Also it has been tons worse today, pretty much unusable, before after say half an hour it would go back fine, no such luck today. Also! started around 10-11am today, any relation?

(Modem burped whilst typin' this, sorry if it double posts!)

Re: internet timing out

At the moment, I think "The Mofo of all Broadband" ought to be the marketing mantra .
I'm sure it'll be sorted soon.
