Re: Website age ratings 'an option'

It's all well and good though saying parents should constantly monitor what their kids are doing on the internet but not always practical we couldn't have 3 pc's in our living room if we tried and what am i meant to do when guests turn up say "sorry i can't stay with you right now my kids are on the internet". I agree there is a problem and we really could do with a solution to it as if they can't be viewed many of the gang videos would certainly disappear which would be good in itself.

As to your point Zing my pc and my daughters and sons have a different ip address's so such a system could be applied to theirs and not mine. Yes this proposal isn't very good but everything has to start somewhere and hopefully this will be the start. Another good start would be for the social networking sites to more strictly administer the content many of them have on them.

Every device on the Internet has a different IP. However, due to the way that routers have to work, if you have a router, your ISP will see all the requests as coming from every PC in your house as coming from one IP. This is called Network Address Translation and basically, your router has it's own range of IPs it can allocate to your devices. It then takes requests from those devices and sends them out to the internet using it's own IP. When the data comes back, your router simply redirects it to your PC).

As such, your ISP (and any websites you visit) only ever see the IP of your router. Someone did find a way around this, but I don't believe it was ever reliable enough for blocking.

The best way for the ISP to implement any blocking system that I can think of is by using routers to do the blocking as I described above.

The accounts ID is good, but it would require one of the following:
  1. Manufacturers patch their OSes/Firmware to block web requests when needed: This would require Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Nintendo, all the various Linux manufacturers (while most people aren't going to be aware they are using Linux, they may be doing so if they are using software on another device to browse) and all the mobile manufacturers who offer WiFi capable phones to co-operate and patch their software.
  2. ISPs introduce a blocking system that works a little like Phorm. Imagine the outcry..
  3. The ISP insist you use their software. This would stop dodgy sites, but may not stop other sources, such as dodgy torrents.

It's also worth noting that the NSPCC agree with me that any such software (whereever it is installed) should not be considered a substitute for parental supervision.

i would only agree with that if the site is aimed at under 18s

i don't agree with censorship other than say having and adult area ( i prefere uncensored instead of that word lol ) and a monitored area

as if this happens those of us adults who want have the net limited for the kids then the other sites can be considered as 18+ so all they should have to do is ask you whether you wish to go to a monitored or a open part of site much like many do now

those adults who wish to let their kids on to the full net then have to take responsibility themselves for what they let their kids see

which is why i would prefer it as a no cost option ( though i would be prepared to pay to have a net much like bbc kids tv )

i have seen quite a few posts on this in other places moaning about cencorship personaly i think it could end the need for a lot of it as i think it would give a reasonable expectation of if you are going to let the kids into the big bad internet then its up to you to police them

because there would be the option of a safer version for the kids

Re: Website age ratings 'an option'

Another way for this to happen is not block all the sites and make 'kids' mature enough to behave on the web.

Only chavy little kids go on websites they shouldnt be on

Just in time for consideration for this years daftest post. All kids will go on things they shouldn't at some point it isn't just "chavvy kids".

Which is the point, in my opinion, telling 'kids' they cannot access content will just motivate them to try & do it.

The premise of 'manipulating' websites to sanitise content is short sighted, you only have to look at the titles of some of the binary newsgroups available to realise that restricting http access is only part of the picture ...

if you are talking about the older kids yes at some point they will figure out a way if thats what they really want

but i can assure you my 7 and 9 year old don't know how to bypass the security i have in place at the moment at home

if at 14 15 etc they get good enough to then hopefully they will have learned enough on how to deal with it too

none of which is reason enough not to try and as what we are talking about is an EXTRA service that you don't have to have what difference will it make to those who don't want it ?

I can't see this working. What if your kids use their friends unprotected Internet? You can't watch over them 24/7. Maybe they have the right not to be blinkered, and to be able to see life/the world as it really is.

Re: Website age ratings 'an option'

My natural instinct is to oppose any type of censorship but i recognise that the internet has the potential to be very influencing to many kids who arn't quite as mature as they might like to think and could slant their views. I think it is right to censor the type of content that kids can view as i do until such time as they are able to view it and be able to tell the difference between fact and rubbish. Can you imagine kids looking at some of the websites some posters on here view often and the slanted view they have on many topics not something i want my kids doing until they have the maturity to be themself rather then just be a sheep following whatever slanted agenda\view some on the internet have.

Re: Website age ratings 'an option'

The internet is not for kids - it's for adults. Stay out of our world. Parents need to learn parenting skills, such as staying at home to actually care for their kids, instead of plonking them in front of the TV and/or Internet and thinking that's good parenting. Tie your tubes if you have no intention of caring for them. Save us all the misery.

Re: Website age ratings 'an option'

Hate to spoil your rant green but for many parents it simply is not possible for them to be in the home all the time with many couples both have to work to make ends meet. This is going to be another topic where the easy thing of shouting "bad parent" is going to happen if only it was that simple.

the internet is for every one and a huge font of knowledge that if used rightly is fantastic way for kids to learn

what is being proposed here does what you want it takes kids out of the part that is for those who are able and are of age to discern what is right

it is not about parents leaving the kids to as they please it is about giving those who don't have the skills some of have the ability to keep their kids safe

from the way you carry on its as though you think they are going to make you use this ?
