Unfortunately it's safe to say that a lot of what's recorded today isn't decent because engineers compress and limit the living daylights out of the dynamic range in recordings to optimise the way they sound on portable music players. It's a shame really because the technology available today would enable them to make something sound truly stunning (sorry, side rant there)
