The electoral college system is no worse / no better than the boundries and lack of Proportional Representation (PR) in the UK.
Voting technology has moved on a lot since the constitution / democracy etc was first set out. The college system was a reasonable attempt at PR back then and to an extent still is. To attempt to count and consoliday millions of votes in day before FedEx would have been an impossible task.

John McCain won the Republican Primary in Florida a few days ago, taking *all* the state's Republican delegates (it's one of the ones that is "winner takes all", rather than proportional)

Billary Clinton won the Democrat Primary in Florida, but takes no delegates at all, as the national Democrat Party punished the state Democrat Party for breaking the rules by holding the Primary early.
