Engineer just left. After the usual tech/visual checks he established that it is definitely a network problem (no surprise). He has also had a number of these issues in the area (no surprise). Threw the proxy server issue into the melting pot and he called his network colleague to see if she could shed any further light. To my *absolute surprise* she confirmed that there were "serious network congestion issues" in the area. Furthermore, she informed him that the whole area has a fixed date for an upgrade on the 14 FEB. I don't know the limits of the 'whole area', but fyi I'm the Brighton end of Preston Park. [edit: I'm on UBR brig6]
So I've asked for this to be explicitly reflected on my notes when he closes the fault, and I'll be calling customer services to get some recompense for it being sooooo bad over the last few months. Will be interesting to see how the upgrade goes...
