It would be nice to think they could vary the price depending on what your set when using ADSL, BT will set your stable line speed and that will be the speed you will get. So why not vary, well they wouldn't get as money off would they!!

Have a look at all Broadband providers and see what sort of traffic management most use.

I'm not disputing that. Paul is asking what he bases the conclusion that some don't get 20Mb even with STM which was introduced to improve the speeds at peak times by cutting the bandwidth to the 5% of heavy downloaders. the conclusion is the posts on this forum, that forum, the other forum, and the VM support and discussion groups.
and here on the site posted in the start of this thread.
“XL customers who have a top advertised speed of 20Mb actually received an average of only 7.6Mb - for which they pay £37 a month.

A small minority, and the mostly unhappy ones at that - I am a very happy VM user getting the full 20Mb out of my line when I need it. Even during peak time I can easily max out the connection while downloading opensource stuff.
As well as obvious contention in busy areas on the VM network, a lot of users seem to forget about the contention that exists at the other end of the pipe - every site / server on the internet can only push out a finite amount of data. Of course, during peak, they will have more users on and thus less available per user.

DSL ISPs pay BT a fixed amount per line on the 'MAX' system, regardless of what speed they are providing to the end user - it doesn't vary with speed at all, only with transfer (cap).
Very few ISPs now provide a service with traffic management of some form or another, some will tell you what they do... some just do it without saying.

No, I wasn't - go read the comment again, his words were " Not many people do seem to get 20mbit" - that's very different to " some don't get 20Mb". No one would dispute that some do not get it.

Re: Ignorant reporting
When I have been hit by STM I get a rock solid 5Meg, this is usually faster than the speed I was getting before the STM kicked in, if contention was an issue I wouldn't see a speed increase with STM so I can only assume that normally during the curfew I am being traffic managed by VM as and when it suits them.

So what is it then. Can they or can't they supply 20mbit?
BTW, I do get 20mbit regularly, although not at peak times.

It depends if your UBR is over subscribed. think of yourself as living in a little village where some that share your pipe are out window shopping and drinking tea at their friends houses. think of the others on another UBR all wanting to watch Britney Spears lookalikes on youtube all at once. too many people wanting to use the service at once, can't cope, over sold, upgrade needed, no money.

Cheers, for that , I am rather experienced with VM's BB infrastructure. My point was an observation abot Trax's posts that seemed to contradict himself.

Re: Ignorant reporting
So what if 51% or more or less of users get 20meg 24/7, thats no consolation at all to those 49% or more or less that are getting shafted 24/7.
So who's up for paying even more for 50meg? Not many, right?
But what if going to 50meg was the only way to get a decent speed and not be STM'ed?
And what if the extra cash VM are making by this great Bandwidth Rip-Off is going to pay for the 50meg Kit?
No proof of course, just thinking out loud...............

Re: Ignorant reporting
I am in agreement that VM need to manage, shape whatever you call it. VM provide routers, so that means 4 pc's can be used on one line. so 20mb shared 5mb, lets call it 4mb each so surfing the web ............with an oversubscribed UBR i get less than 1mb in the evening so that divided by 4 gives surfing the web 256k if we arre lucky......THATS WHY I'M MAD....and if some noob says buy 4 lines i'll boil his head. But oh no its the downloaders, people cry.........get real it's virgin not updating the servers.....and don't cry its running at a loss.....Branson get your hands out of your pockets and spend some cash

careful there, you don't want to do a silly thing like suggesting VM are using STM to save money so they can upgrade the network! everyone knows the money is going to the back pockets [/sarcasm]
STM is here temporarily and imo it's better than no STM, so what if it saves VM money, they need it! even traxdata (who is known to put vm down at any possibility) will agree the sooner docsis 3 is implemented the better and if the money saved from having STM helps that process then who the hell cares

Re: Ignorant reporting
Heavy downloaders do make a huge differance!! A UBR can only supply 37meg bandwidth. So, all you need is 2 leechers running 24/7 at that UBR is borked!
There are massive upgrades going on for the advent of 50meg.
I get 20meg speeds 24/7. ner ner na ner ner!!!!!
Its been said many times, but it depends which "Old" network you are connected to, for instance, most of the old Nynex areas are pretty good, where as the "old" Videotron areas are sh1te ( Cue mud Slinging)
I for one dont think this baord is a heathly representation of customer satisfaction. One its relativley small and secondly peeps only came here to complain or seek help (Or give help)

I know very little about the cable infrastructure, but I seriously doubt a UBR only has 37Mb of bandwidth. IF that was the case,
a) there'd have to be hundreds of the things in each area
b) there'd be no speed on hte network at all
