Except it wouldn't be them that sinks, more likely it would be the other independent channels that go under first

Well TV is excellent if you know where to look. Some of the best TV ever made is being made now. The Wire in the USA is contender for best ever show imo. As for the UK the BBC is still making excellent television, an example of NEW shows from the Beeb this year:

Mitchell and Webb Look
Andrew Marr's History of Britain
Jekyll

to add too

Doctor Who
Have I got News for you
Planet Earth
Louis Theroux Documentrys
Extras
Life on Mars
Hustle

As well as some other good one off Documentrys and I think there was a one off Drama that I have forgotten about?

That aired this year. All that in one season, no other channel American or UK can claim they have a line up like that. Also unlike some of the other channels all those above were made by the BBC by British people. Its something to be proud off not to destory.

Would another channel have commited so much into Planet Earth? Or even done it? Would any other channel have taken risks with stuff like the Office? No.

The other channels are lucky to have any orignal british programming. Name me some new english shows from outside the BBC that were of such high quality? Without the BBC we would be like France and other European countrys showing mostly reality programs, poorly written soaps and importing the rest from America.

The BBC is one the best channels in the world. It promotes the UK by ensuring we produce some of the best actors, shows and writers in the world (Hugh Laurie in House, The Office in America, Rome and Band of brothers with HBO/BBC, Michelle Ryan in Bionic Woman on NBC?). Getting rid of the BBC would be a massive blow to British culture and decrease the quality of our programming. The other channels would lose money and take less risks (not that they take much) and the BBC would take a lot less and soon this countrys TV will be America 2 and show nothing of what we can do.

Chances are the government would introduce a tv tax if the licence was abolished, either that or give it free and use it as a vehicle for their own machinations

It's a nice way to put it but I dont think the issue is as simple as that. In the same way that governments have support for art although many who pay the taxes dont go to art gallerys. Theres culture at stake.

This is more than their high quality of programming, which is very high. Its about the BBC giving many young actors a chance, many new ideas a chance, and making a lot of British shows. Without them what we have left. You really need to see what TV is like in European countrys to see just how lucky we are.

Imagine all the actors, shows, musicians, writers and so on that we would not have if we did not have the BBC. We would not have TV which is respected world wide or a news service which is. This is before we get into the other stuff the BBC does for schools, other artists, they do projects (recording memories from WW2 for example), and so on.

Young actors if they had the talent would get breakthroughs on other channels. Why should i and the majority millions that dont' watch\listen to anything on the BBC have to continually pay for it. I am sure they would survive if they went down the road ITV have gone down jjst wouldn't be able to have such huge numbers working for them and wouldn't have such great salaries at the top i can live with that. If you want and enjoy the BBC all power to you......pay for it like i do with my cable.

I am sure they'd survive as well, the programming would suffer, no more public interest broadcasting for instance, not to sure most of your cable channels would survive though, not at their current price at any rate

ITV is a example for the BBC not to go down that route. ITV is terrible at the moment, reality programs and when they attempt drama they just cannot do it and fall back on police/crime dramas. They tried to start a new TV show, so what did they do? Lewis! Another crime drama based on a old ITV crime drama. They do not do many new shows either.

Where would they get a breakthrough? Sky has 'dream team' which is made in the UKL and sometimes a poor documentry usually something stupid 'Why chavs are KOOL!!!!!' or such like. The other cable channels are mostly repeats and american shows. C5 dont really like British shows. Channel 4 do a couple but again a lot is american or reality programs. Documentrys sometimes. Leaves us with ITV which make few British Dramas/Comedys. Certainly nothing near the amount of the BBC.

So where would they get their breakthough? Would The Office have been made? Would Fry and Laurie be around? (No House with Laurie). and so on and so on. A bunch of famous actors started at the Beeb so I am not going to list them.

But where would all these talented British actors and comedians have come from without the BBC?

Not to mention of other channels would actually be even less likely to do anything other than the cheapest, mass-market appeal shows if the BBC entered the ad market.

Apart from ITV,Channel 4 and Channel 5 who are alll desperately chasing the same advertising funding I can't think of another channel that has anything like the funding to support finding new talent to any great degree.

Oh damn now I'll have to unsubscrbe again...
