24 hour drinking is just one of the successes.

24 hour drinking was one example, the reason I brought it up is how unpopular it was and how quiet everyone has been now it turns out it worked.

Re: Gordon Browns initial cabinet?
Well whether or not it's a success depends on what the real aim was doesn't it. If the main goal was to reduce tensions and friction amongst the puiblic at closing time by staggering hours then it may well have worked. If the aim was to make younger people more relaxed about alcohol and thereby reduce the sort of binge drinking which is becoming almost endemic amongst certain sections of society then I'm not sure it's worked at all.

I dont think it was ever aimed at young drinkers, either legal or otherwise (underage drinking should not be affected at all). After all people would then go to a club or drink at home after closing time.
It was simply designed to avoid the scenes on a friday/saturday night when everyone gets let loose into the streets at the same time fueled by drink. All the violence as you mentioned. It could have also been seen as a way to make people stagger their drinking since they no longer have a deadline of 11pm to get their drinks down.
Besides all of which, 11pm is a stupid time to stop serving drinks

I'd say the most evil of the 2 would be best.

Re: Gordon Brown's initial Cabinet?
Harriet Harman is now Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, & also Party Chair.

She isn't going to be Deputy PM though.
Brown is now Labour Leader, & becomes PM on Wednesday -

I wonder if Jack Straw will go back to being Foreign Secretary? He ran Brown's campaign, & is currently Leader of the House of Commons (after being demoted by Blair to that position from Foreign Secretary, like Robin Cook before him).

Re: Gordon Brown's initial Cabinet?
Ah yes Ms Harman - she's the one who likes fast cars isn't she?

As Solicitor General it really was very fortunate that she was only accidentally doing 99mph in a 70mph zone wasn't it - still it's an easy mistake
