I'm not sure it's as simple as that. The owners of those rights will consider not only how much the buyer is offering to pay, but how much awareness their programmes will get, and how much that will affect their spin-off commercial activities. I suspect the big money is not in the programme rights, but in the sale of Simpsons' etc merchandise ... and the value of that depends on the number of people able to watch the programme.

"Virgin 1" with the "hit TV shows" would not be viable as a cable-only channel; VM could not afford to out-bid Sky, the advertisers would not be interested in the reduced audience potential. It would only work if it was available on satellite, and in the current climate, I don't imagine Sky would be too keen to add it to their delivery service for a reasonable fee.

Maybe it's time for the regulators to split "delivery" from "content", and force the content providers to make their product/channel available to all delivery methods on the same price basis - £"x" per "y" potential viewers, perhaps; or if it's VOD, £"0.xx" per view.

Sky was reported as obtaining season 3 at nearly 1M per episode. Given that figures for Sky 1 were dropping even with LOST, I really don't see how VM can afford season 4.

Loved to be proved wrong though.
