What I'm trying to point out is not that anybody should start a war with their neighbours, but that whichever way you dress it up stealing someone else's bandwidth by hijacking their wireless connection is wrong.

It doesn't matter if it's just for a week or two while you get your own connection sorted, it's still wrong (morally) and illegal (as has been demonstrated recently in the press).

no im saying I would have done it. If someone is silly enough not to follow basic instructions (and routers do come with them on cd normally) then more fool them. I wouldnt scan and try to break encryption. Im not the worlds most honest man but I teli it how it is if you catch my drift

Ha ha, I didn't mean to start a morality war, once again thanks for putting my mind at ease and yes, it was my fault.

Tempting as getting 'revenge' sounds, I will be happy in the knowledge my network in now as secure as it can be and will leave it at that.

This is perfectly normal, when a machine wants to get an IP address with DHCP it sends out a broadcast using the MAC address ffffffffffff to 255.255.255.255 this is the broadcast address for the network. Meaning, it's sending out a request to everything on the network and waiting for something to reply.

hello i just mooved in next door ,noticed your car wasent locked so i took the family for a spin ,i know its ok cos its not secure,can you leave a window open when you go out we need a new carpet.

Yeah fine, it's wrong but it's as bad to leave the "Window Open" as the metaphor goes, as you've found, it isn't difficult to enable a little security. I'm currently opening a shop on the main road between Bournemouth and Poole and I have set up Wireless Access points for stock taking (using a neat little PDA). Anyway, if I stand near the front Window I can pick up an unsecured network called "getencryption". And sure enough I can log onto this network and access all of the Router functions as the passwords are all default. Unfortunately I have no way of knowing who this AP belongs to (there are quite a number of (Secured) WiFi networks there.

I had the good fortune to be able to pick up Maccie D's wireless connection while i was waiting for my own ADSL to be fitted, as its across the road from my new place (big mistake, i'm getting fat!)

Actually that reminded me of my old neighbours, who hijacked my conn and was downloading movies, was his income since he was an unemployable layabout.

Had a friend who wrote a script for me, that everything he downed be it P2P, nntp, http, ftp every byte was FF or 255 decimal. He took 3 days to finally figure out that it wasnt just a coincedence, and shame it was when LOTR and Harry Potter was just out. Hah. He lost many a sale then.

He finally figured out it was my connection and tried to be cheeky with me, big fat guy trying to act tough, so I kicked the crap out of him and I got a Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£50 fine

Which didnt please me, so someone tipped FACT anonymously that he did DVD-r's. Cest La Via as they say :P

(need to find that script again)
