I always recommend these to newcomers to wireless routers. Very good and very easy to use.

Re: Recommend a wireless router please!

Hi,
Virgin came on thusday to install cable modem (we were on 1meg wireless from tv drive)
What a balls up from the start! They said they would provide a free router, hat is now not the case! They have stopped sending them out because of problems with their routers apparently. They have told me to go and buy one and send them the receipt for refund.
We have a wireless desktop, new windows media 2005 core 2 duo laptop (vista upgrade applied for) and xbox 360 with wireless adapter (using at mo through someone elses wireless network unsecured!!!)
The chap at virgin recommends i buy the D Link one at pcworld for about £45.
I dont know much about these things, would this one be ok? Or would you techie guys recommend anything else?
At the mo i have plugged in my Netgear Wired access point to the modem but think this is only capable of 1 meg as nothing is different.
I am beginning to think i should have left everything as it was and just plugged in the Netgear adapter in the laptop when needed, i am sooo frustrated.
What with the troubles with PC guard...aaarrgghhhh, i had it on Wednesday on my 1 meg running everything, reinstalled it again and it keeps telling me know i have to upgrade, when i know the bloody modem is running at 400mbps, due to plugging the laptop directly to it,'The Indian call centre was BLOODY useless last night and gave up, and reverted back to windows firewall and AVG.....HELP!!!

Yes because using someone elses internet (regardless if they know or not) is a clever thing to do.

Some people have no respect for t & c's

Re: Recommend a wireless router please!

There is a general rule of thumb with routers

The cheaper they are the harder and more complex to set options etc

The more expensive the easier it is.

After all you get what you pay for :P

Seriously, we didnt know that it wasnt working through our own network until a friend of the family looked at the connection. (we know more or less zilch about these)
My son hasnt used it live since we have arranged virgin to install sacm. Just the problem of sorting out the router now!

Our choices so far are:
Netgear WG111
Netgear WGR614
D Link DWL-922
or Linksys.

So this would have to work with Webstar modem 4 meg, running Xbox 360,
Desktop and Laptop.

Fire away guys please, we are going to buy thisafternoon and really dont know which one. Have trawled all the forums and still none the wiser!!
Thanks again,
Lorraine.x

Re: Recommend a wireless router please!

Belkin are reasonably priced and nice and easy to set up.

They should vary from 30-45 quid depending where you decide to buy from.

And make sure its a DSL/Cable one and not ADSL as that would be disasterous.

Hi and Thanks for your reply.
What about this one on special at pcworld.

Linksys WRT54GSUK on offer at £41 instore price of £59.99 although i have read that it would only use speedbooster facility with matching wireless pc card, but i thought this still a good buy?
Cheers

Re: Recommend a wireless router please!

Remember to haggle, say you will buy both if they knock a further 5-10 off the price :P

I've got the WRT54GSUK and it works great with my Xbox 360 and computer.

You will only be able to take advantage of the speedbooster if you have a matching Linksys speedbooster adaptor.

And what do you recommend to share virgin broadband. I've got Laptop with Wireless, and I want share broadband with PS2 via Ethernet and PS3 in the future.

You shouldn't have any problems with a Linksys WRT54GS.
