One cheap option would to use your graphics card if it's VIVO

ATI Radeon VIVO cards are pretty good the last time I checked.

As so far as encoding with a VIVO is concerned COME ON would you do it ? :p
'Come on read the posts' what £17 to much you think ?, ROFL

seeing as YOU mentioned VIVO CrC
the best priced current ATI board VIVO x1600 i can find is £82.24 Including VAT although theres a x1300 at £64.61 Including VAT

would that encode ok.

OOPS those wernt VIVO LOL

well it would seem they dont do a cheap current generation ATI VIVO as far as i can find, strange....
the best i can find is the X800 chip and i seem to remember thats a broken/relabeled chip ?.

i dont know CrC, i dont currently have one to try, thats why i asked, i do know that the software Encoding part of the AVIVO* package uses some of the hardware in the X1000 series chips to do the Encoding and hence makes it far faster than CPU only bound encoding.

thats old news, i cant find the original url from wayback when but this should help

Heh nice : I have 9800pro somewhere I might try it... The only capture I do these days is from a DV source never tried composite.
? so how are you capturing this DV, or do you mean just copying the original DV MPeg to your PC ?.

*AVIVO does not mean VIVO (aka Video-in/Video-Out), its a brand name for the whole software/hardware package.

very funny I'm not having a great day I've absolutely ****** up my perfect kubuntu dapper -> edgy install... Its ok now but there is something just not quite right about it... but at least I can install synce which was the main purpose of the upgrade.

Absolutely love this symbol thanks mate.

Yeh DV capture is via firewire of course.

And as u seem to have a lot more time than can you please recheck and find a cheapo card heh

dunno about x1600 ATI cards, but my 'All in Wonder' Radeon 9800se copes with capturing realtime 720x576 mpeg2 at 8Mb/s with 48KHz 16 bit stereo, which is fully DVD compatible, but makes very big files. For Mpeg4/Avc files I wouldn't be surprised if a third party converter is available, although, obviously, having it done in realtime by the card, is preferable.

we may be getting beyond the OP's requirement to just watch TV on his PC monitor, though
LOl, true, but its good to give people the option...

i looked again for some or indeed any x1300/x1600 VIVO cards and they just dont exist today, you can get x1800 and x1900 or x800 but nothing inbetween, werd....

Zing, you have a x1900 dont you?, can that take a standard tv cards composite-in and realtime Encode that with the AVIVO software?, or is your card a VIVO model and if so id hope it could?.

yeah, but your NOT capturing it though are you?, as in, taking the original (an this case, firewire) supplyed DV mpeg(2?) video and encoding it INTO something else in realtime?.

your infact not capturing, but mearly copying the DV mpeg (in this case, over the firewire lead) to your harddrive or am i missing something?.

SIGV
