i had this problem, when i turned on my pc and suddenly my modem lost connection,
I am with telewest btw.
I found the cable connection to my modem was dodgy, so i got a wrench/allen key thingy and tightened it, now i have no such problem, and my download speed has increased by 10kbps!!
Just a quick note here, never tighten an F connector with any kind of tool. You may damage the connector. Finger tight is all that is required, and if the cable gets moved or disturbed, check every so often that it is still connected tightly and not loose.
