Re: missing space in my hard drive

0870 is a non-geographic number, so should be charged as a national rate charge.

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Try the email support option and if they don't respond within 24 hours I would call the support line. I don't suppose there is any other support number listed on the paperwork that came with the pc is there?
The repair center is in Plymouth so hopefully it won't take long to be sorted out for you. Make sure they don't expect you to pay to send the pc to them though

The out of hours support is 50 p/min.

0870 numbers are charged at national price. See http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/mofaq/...70faq/#content

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Did you install Everest and use it to check the SMART status as that would give you a very easy to see indication of wether the drive is failing?

Instructions:

1. Download the Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, Windlg.zip
2. Extract and run the program, windlg.exe
3. Read and accept the license agreement to continue.
4. On the main program screen, there are two windows. In the top window, you will see the drives in your system, that are available for testing. The model number, serial number, and capacity of each drive will be displayed. In the bottom window, the partition information for the selected drive will be displayed.
5. Highlight the drive and select the icon on the top row to test or run SMART status.
6. The DLGDIAG - Select an Option window appears.
7. You will see the following options:
* QUICK TEST - performs SMART drive quick self-test to gather and verify the Data Lifeguard information contained on the drive.
* EXTENDED TEST - performs a Full Media Scan to detect bad sectors. Test may take several hours to complete depending on the size of the drive.
* WRITE ZEROS - writes zeros to the drive with options of Full Erase and Quick Erase. File system and data will be lost.
* VIEW TEST RESULT - displays the latest test results.
8. Select the test you wish to perform and click the Start button.
9. When the test completes, you will be notified. Click the Close button.
10. A web page will display the test results for the drive.
It's the Western Digital diagnostic software for hard drives. This or the Everest Smart test will indicate the condition of the drive so you can tell Acer customer support exactly what is wrong with it.

WinXP out of the box cannot address more that 127Gb. You need to update to sp2. Sounds like when you got your pc it had sp1/sp2 on it but when you reformatted you only put original XP on it.

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Did you run the software from Western Digital? It would seem that the smart status of the drive is fine and since it's not making noises now we need to address the other point that has been raised. Have you installed SP2 to it yet?

Might want to install SP2 first, see if the space comes back and if it does I would suggest you monitor the drive for any future noise. A noisy drive is not a good sign to be honest.

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Sounds like one of the partitions you merged back onto your "Main drive" space is knackered. Did you ever run the hard drive diagnostics from the manuifacturer that I posted in one of my previous posts? If your drive is back to making a racket now you are accessing the full drive I would look to get it back for repairs or replacement.
