Another advantage of THICK phase change goop on an AMD heatsink, it helps to minimise the risk of cracking/chipping the core - and the surplus just disappears like magic!
With a thin paste, you have to be a lot more careful.
And finally, with heatsinks the need the clips screwdrivered on and off, watch out for the motherboard - if it's awkward, there's no alternative but to disassemble to the point you can remove the motherboard tray, or maybe take the PSU out if the motherboard is not on a removable tray.

It's ok, I've done it now. But I did have to take the PSU out, and the HSF [which was a s*it to apply] was a sh*t to take off, the new one went on like a f*ck*ng dream though.
Yes... an AMD Athlon, also believe it's the old thoroughbred core as well. really should get a Barton 3000+ - the m/b supports it via a bios flash... just money...
You can have a rep anyway...

Too right acetone's aggressive... I've seen it shift stuff you've spent ages trying to wash off.
50:50 acetone/water is probs fine though. Dunno what this stuff is, it says it's "citrus-based solvent" hmm...
[why is IPA less aggressive, surely it's just reduced acetone?]

acetone will not easily mix with water
IPA will
IPA = iso propyl alcohol = propan- 2 - ol
acetone = dimethyl ketone - it is what your breath will smell of on an 'atkins' diet

Suppose that's not too far off... although that said, I've rarely had a problem getting acetone and water to mix! IPA will be better because I suppose an OH is more polar than an O- even if it's double bonded!
[And I know what IPA and acetone are. It'd be worrying if I didn't... put it that way!]
Aside 2... I lurve the smell of acetone. May have to go on the Atkins diet
