I had an old TV that used to do this, turned out to be a dry joint on the back of the connection to the tube...
(PLEASE NOTE - THERE ARE LETHAL VOLTAGES INSIDE THE CABINET!!!)

Oddly enough, it also happens if you watch tele whilst suspended from the ceiling long enough, but that may have little to do with the tele
