Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
go into thunderbird...
go to tools > account settings > outgoing server (smtp settings)
remove the username in there if there is one and untick username and password
you should then be able to send mail ok
hope this helps
thunderbird automatically ticks username and password as default it appears even though there is no username in there and something that has happened while upgrading the ntl smtp servers has caused anyone with these settings ticked to fail :S

Thanks, that worked !!!!!!!!
How did that setting change? I haven't made any changes to Thunderbird - very weird.

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
its not you, ntl have changed the outgoing smtp server to esmtp, which i believe they were not using before (correct me if i am wrong) you have always had it ticked and it has just accepted a blank username, however the new server software that they are using does not accept this and will then force you to enter a username and password which the server is not using and will ultimately refuse.

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
why does the new server not want a username, I take it they know who we are from the IP address and phone line, instead of just a username?!
it takes a wee bit longer to send than last week, is this due to the upgrade?

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
the old server did not want a username either just like this one as you are allowed to send an email via it as long as you are on an ntl ip range otherwise it will not allow you to send anything, the previous smtp server ignored the fact that there was an empty username, whereas this one does not and you need to untick it :s
as for the server upgrades i know there is a lot of testing being carried out for a couple of new features to be released soon which will please some of you this could be causing it to run slower than normal

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Maybe they should divert some of their testing resources to fixing current problems? I have been having problems receiving emails for 5 days now - some arrive, others do not. NTL assure us that they will all arrive once the problem is resolved, woopy doo, it would have been quicker for the sender to use a carrier pigeon. And I can't send emails by SMTP, just via webmail (which is subject to frequent 504 timeout errors).
Grrr.

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
the testing is important, and integral to making the platform more stable ultimately with the introduction of the new features

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Still no outgoing email via Outlook. Service just times out. Ntl's Server Status page said there was a problem on the 9th Nov 16.00. 3 days on still not working. Is there a fix or does anyone know when NTL are likely to solve the problem?
Cheers
