Sorted last night, his modem just needed a quick remote kicking + 1.5Mbit took over 
More to the point it's working really well so he tells me, fast as you like, and a nice change from before!

Well, all this time on and I'm still loving NTL's service, cannot fault it anymore, nice to know NTL arent as bad as I thought, I just hope others that were in the same position as me get theirs sorted
