i got the network working, i have to plug my ntl modem into it for it to work so pretty much a waste of money haha
can anyone plz tell me how to comfig the router, open ports, apply bandwidth ect?

Of course you have to plug your modem into it - it's only a router. You can't exchange your modem for it.....and you say VM don't have a clue.

i know it says on the box "cable modem/router" so im taking it back, its not a cable modem / router its a router, aint that misadvertisment?!

No its not false advertising, its a router that is used with a Cable Modem, the boxes are pretty clear, or at least the box for my D-Link DL-524 is.
I think perhaps you should concentrate on working out what your problem is with understanding this technology instead of blaming service providors and hardware vendours.

Don't buy a cable modem from ebay or out of the paper thinking it will improve things for you. Virgin need to have the details of the modem in your account for it to work and they will not add a new modem to it unless it has been suplpied by one of their engineers.
Just thought I'd mention that in case you see one.
