Guitar Pete came from the clouds in the hands of Paul Carberry to claim top honours in the Injured Jockeys Fund 50th Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree.

The 13-2 chance was nearer last than first rounding the home turn and still had plenty of work to do approaching the final flight.

Rebecca Curtis is confident Cheltenham Festival hero O'Faolains Boy remains at the top of his game ahead of the Betfred Mobile Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree today.

The seven-year-old stayed on determinedly up the Prestbury Park hill to deny Smad Place in an RSA Chase thriller last month, prevailing by a neck in the hands of Barry Geraghty in what is notoriously a tough race for novice chasers.

Waley-Cohens in for the Long haul.

Owner Robert Waley-Cohen and his jockey-son Sam have enjoyed tremendous success over the Aintree fences but it could all pale into insignificance if Long Run wins the first £1million renewal of the Crabbie's Grand National tomorrow.

Katarino twice claimed the Fox Hunters', Liberthine landed the Topham Chase and was fifth in the National, while Oscar Time also came very close when second in the main event. As recently as Thursday, Warne led from pillar-to-post to give the Waley-Cohens another success in the Fox Hunters'.

Holy hits Mildmay target.

Holywell galloped his rivals into submission to run out an impressive winner of the Betfred Mobile Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree.

Jonjo O'Neill's smart hurdler took a while to get the hang of things over fences, but has hit top form since the turn of the year, winning at Catterick and Doncaster before striking in handicap company at the Cheltenham Festival for the second time.

Bob bags Melling prize.

Paul Townend has carved out a niche by deputising for Ruby Walsh and he finally gained Grade One recognition in Britain with a wonderfully timed challenge on Boston Bob in the Betfred Melling Chase.

Although he has multiple big-race wins to his name in Ireland, where he was champion jockey in the 2010-11 season through the many rides he received from the Willie Mullins stable, Townend has only struck once at the Cheltenham Festival and this was his first Aintree success.

Townend bids to be king on Prince.

Paul Townend, so often in the shadow of Ruby Walsh, gets his big chance to make headlines of his own with the potentially plum ride on Prince De Beauchene in the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree.

Dual National winner Walsh broke his arm at the Cheltenham Festival, leaving stable number two Townend to take the ride on a horse that has missed the last two runnings through injuries of his own when he would have been a leading contender.

Bailey hunting second success.

The Rainbow Hunter will bid to give Gloucestershire trainer Kim Bailey a second Grand National success today 24 years on from Mr Frisk's record-breaking victory in the race.

The horse was unfortunate in last year's renewal when parting company with Aidan Coleman at the Canal Turn on the first circuit when seemingly travelling well. Even more frustrating for connections is the fact he then went on to jump the remaining 22 fences near-perfectly before chasing the winner Auroras Encore all the way to the line.

National glory for Pineau.

Pineau De Re claimed Crabbie's Grand National glory at Aintree for trainer Dr Richard Newland and jockey Leighton Aspell.

The 11-year-old was a 25-1 shot after finishing third in the Pertemps Final over hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival and moved into the race travelling powerfully.

He jumped the final fence in a clear lead and his pursuers never looked like bridging the gap as he galloped all the way to the line to secure a momentous five-length victory.

Balthazar King ran a fine race to finish second, ahead of champion jockey Tony McCoy aboard Double Seven. Alvarado stayed on from a long way back to finish fourth, while for those punters who bet with bookmakers paying out on the first five, Rocky Creek occupied that berth.
