Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk
Why would you offer Tesco £5 for bread? They don't charge £5 for bread, but NTL do charge £24.99 for 2MB Broadband, though i see where you're both coming from ...

I also have phone and DTV. I would have no real need of TU24 to be honest, but I wouldn't consider cancelling any of my three services, so I won't lie by ringing them and saying I would.
Stupid? Maybe! But unlike many I understand the 'rules' of business. In the long term you get what you pay for. One of the reasons I'd not even consider the Talk Talk deal is that I prefer my supplier to be making some sort of profit out of my business. Long term, you don't get something for nothing.
I'm not advocating paying more than you need to, just saying that nothing in life is truly free.

have you ever stopped and thought that talk talk are still making a profit from offering you broadband and free calls for £21 a month and that ntl / bt might be making massive profits from charging you £40 a month ?

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk
They probably do make profits from those who barely use their connection, lets not forget their is a fair few users who probably buy broadband and use it under 5 hours a month, personally I see that as crazy and would use PAYG dialup but people do it and these type of customers are cash cows for isp's.

Not true, CPW anticipates to make a loss until 2008:

Eh?
I really don't care if you do or you don't. My point is nothing to do with caps or network usage.
My point is, I'd rather a business charged a realistic price so that it can afford to properly maintain its networks.
I'm not criticising people who take the special deals for threatening to cancel. Just pointing out that if EVERYONE did that, the company would be forced into a corner and that may lead to problems.
Businesses exist to make money, I don't have a problem with them doing so, within acceptable boundaries.

I don't think that language and/or attitude is really called for mate.
Although your point is good, they are probably taking the extra profits from them instead of you, you could of phrased it a little friendlier

Ah just had to answer this..
Firstly people aren't always threatening to disconnect they're happily throwing these discounts at people.
Second you may understand the 'rules' of business but ntl still don't - they discount without any further contract tie-in, and constantly pay the price for it from people who persistently obtain discounts. What do mobile companies do when you phone to leave? I believe they offer you deals subject to renewing your contract with them, yes?
The margins on ntl's products do suggest that some of these deals would be loss making, however whose problem is that besides ntl's?
If ntl are in a position where they have to discount to retain customers that's no-one's problem besides theirs. If they had the quality of service, the value adds, and the customer service to keep more people happy without having to pimp, beg and discount to hell in an attempt to keep them.
Personally I think they should be offering lower prices anyway if they can afford to offer these discounts to whoever calls up asking about their deals.
You seem to forget that you're a customer, and are set upon acting like a stakeholder in the business. That's really your problem. Personally I'd have no problem seeing them go back through C11 bankruptcy and at the end be bought out by UPC, which is likely with or without the bankruptcy.

the only reasoning that could be behind ntl's policy is they should obtain and keep customers at all cost, even if they not making a profit from them.
Ntl have the market share they are big, they should be concentrating on increasing revenue per consumer but keep stretching themselves out thinner and thinner.

That's the standard new customers' offer. Do you know whether you're under new contract or not? And does it automatically go to £24.99 after that?
Anyway, I've had the £24.99 bb for about 2 years now. I'd like to ring retentions for a new deal. Thing is my threat to cancel would be weakened by the fact that I'm only 9 months into a Phone+TV contract on a seperate Account number.
Basically, if they were smart, they'd realise that I couldn't get another broadband provider to replace my NTL service because I don't have a BT line anymore. And I can't really threaten to ditch the Phone service because I'm under contract for 3 more months.
Obviously this is only if they are smart, I realise people in this thread are reporting new deals whilst still under contract and there is no consistancy at all. I'd like to know whether I can cancel my service without being charged a large lump fee. I like most people here never read the massive document they sent when I first signed up - of course I never even filled it in, so I guess that means I'm not officially contracted to anything...
Any thoughts? I'd like to ring them on Monday.
