Re: R36 Firmware Beta Test (was R35)

Probably for the best, the amount of homework I'm doing for VM keeps me plenty busy!!

Re: R36 Firmware Beta Test (was R35)

So should I change from 145mbps to 300 OBSS (on or off).

What would I get better speed and reliability from?

Yeah, what Kymmy said.

I presume it sets the Superhub back to the old default "selfishly violate wifi standards to benefit our own users to the detriment of customers of other, properly behaved ISPs" mode, aka force 300mbps.

I'm glad they finally admitted they got the whole 5Ghz has better range than 2.4Ghz thing the complete wrong way round...

Before:

After:

Speedtest:

I have been moved to a new upstream channel so I can't really tell if this new firmware has helped or not or whether I've been moved to a less congested port. It's a new channel ID and frequency which I haven't had in the past. Judging by what I'm seeing, I'm not sure if this is worse? or better asthere are more spikes now than before, where before it was constant.

Loving the new GUI though, makes navigation so much easier. And also, it is just me, or is the letter O on the sign out button look like a zero?

Getting about 25mbps from them. Nowhere near the 60mpbs though.

Is it because it is prime time?

Although the firmware has reduced the jitter please remember that no firmware in the world is going to help a congested network. That'll take a major upgrade of your local VM network

I agree, with some provisos:

If the firmware improves network utilization efficiency and reduces bandwidth wastage, there'll be broad-reaching improvements as a result

If it simply reduces a performance fault without improving efficiency, it could do the opposite, since if everyone's connection suddenly starts performing better, it may cause them to use it more.

Re: R36 Firmware Beta Test (was R35)

Hub must have updated overnight only noticed it this morning when I actually had a wireless connection on my phone upstairs for the first time in months

Not too sure on the new GUI but thats probably just because I'm not familiar with it yet (every other router, hub, ap etc I've ever dealt with has the traditional left side menu)

My wireless signal strength has increased by an average 9db according to inSSIDer (A major improvement!) No dead spots around the house or garden now

After reconfiguring for 300Mbps (had defaulted back to 144) Wireless speeds were lower than previous firmware and adaptor stuck at 65Mbps and sitting 6ft from hub only gave me 48Mb on a 100Mb connection. After reading a few posts on the trial forum and some trial and error, it turns out it was OBSS killing my connection. Turned it off, wireless connection speed has increased to 135Mbps and I'm actually hitting 97-101Mb wireless download on my 100mb connection and 9.7Mb wireless upload. I'm actually impressed!

Jitter has dropped from an average 6.92ms to an average 2.74ms but no real change to latency - 12.88ms average from 15.2ms average and no change to routing.

No change to downstream power levels and snr:

Power Level (dBmV) 1.3 dBmV 2.4 dBmV 2.3 dBmV 1.8 dBmV
RxMER (dB) 41.9 dB 42.6 dB 42.5 dB 42.5 dB

No change to upstream:

Power Level (dBmV) 44.8 dBmV

If it stays like this then I'll be quite a happy bunny. Only down side for me up to now is that there's still no option for custom DNS servers or Dyndns settings

Going to throw some heavy duty use - File transfers, Multi thread downloads and HD Media streaming at it tonight to see if I can make it roll over as easily as the R30.

Cheers

Phil
