I am not the greatest fan of the current Government but, to date, they have followed almost to the letter the Pandemic Influenza preparedness plans in place for a number of years. Check from page 34 onwards here - https://assets.publishing.service.go.../dh_131040.pdf

Yeah and the Spanish flu killed over 17 million people, we are fortunate this is not that bad.
I am not advocating any insanity, I pointing out epidemiological facts and appropriate strategy.

But those most at risk of dying from flu, like myself, are offered a free flu jab every year. There isn't as yet a vaccine against the Coronavirus.

So basically your confirming Flu is even more dangerous, yet no one panics every year like madmen.

I received a text from my GP a few days ago about the jab. Not sure sitting in a waiting room full of sick people is a good idea.

Do the current events around the world happen every year?

The coronavirus causes the Covid-19 disease. In severe cases, patients have pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and multiple organ failure that can lead to death.

Pneumonia might be "normal" for flu, but I'm not sure the other 2 problems are.
The mortality and hospitalisation rates are huge in comparison.

BBC News
I assume they mean this Coronavirus has different presentations and symptoms to other Coronaviruses in the past.

So how many other countries have followed Italy? The levels in Italy are very different from anywhere else except China.

They've been unlucky, it could equally as well been us. It was obviously circulating a long time before they were aware. However we are forewarned and we should be forearmed; we shouldn't wait for events to unfold before taking the right actions. Learn from what's happened there.

Re: Coronavirus
Italian prison system pretty much just collapsed - Police union have said they've lost control of 27 prisons.
Virus aside. The current state of the markets and Italy collapsing bit by bit, the damage done by the effects may end up being more than the direct virus.
As for more cancellations. With Serie A being suspended and whatever other leagues that follow in the coming weeks and months it wouldn't be too far out of reach to suggest Euro 2020 will be cancelled if the leagues can't resume in good time.

Germany, France, and Spain all have more cases than the UK. What have they done?
