THE COMPLICATIONS
In short, a defeat or draw will result in Oxford bowing out of the Football League to play in the Football Conference next season.
A win may not be enough either, but with 5 teams on 51 points and Bury on 52, they could yet be the ones that fall through the trapdoor and save Oxford.
Oxford's goal difference of -13 could well prove beneficial as most teams have goal differences very similar with the exception of Stockport. Their goal difference of -21 is at least 6 behind the next best goal difference which suggests that a draw might not be enough for them if Oxford win.
Likewise, if other teams draw whilst Oxford win, it could create a huge headache for the table compilers as we could end up with teams being tied on points and goal difference. In that case, we look at the goals scored column.
Bury 43
Macclesfield 57
Torquay 53
Barnet 42
Notts County 46
Stockport 57
Oxford 41
Scoring goals has been Oxford's weakest link this season. Most teams with the exception of Barnet, Bury and possibly Notts County are too far out of reach to catch up on. However, with so many teams tightly packed, a win for Oxford should see them safe unless some of the most bizarre results go against them.
Bury and Notts County play each other yet both could still mathematically go down should Oxford win.
So to sum up, if Oxford can defeat Leyton Orient on Saturday, it should be enough to guarantee safety - but the question is, will they get that win?
