HBO series normally are released on disc around eleven months after broadcast, just before the next season is due to air. Treme and Game of Thrones are following that pattern, but Boardwalk Empire hasn't - season 1 was broadcast in the autumn on 2010 and season 2 a year late, but we only had season 1 on disc January 2011 and there's no release date yet for the second season. (US and UK releases are pretty much simultaneous I think.)

Availability for non-Sky Atlantic customers not helped by HBO not selling new series via iTunes or other download services. Other Sky Atlantic programmes though look like they could fair better: Mad Men season 5 is already announced on iTunes US and episodes will be available the day after US broadcast, with the disc sets following around six months after the season ends on AMC.

When Sky launches its announced Netflix/Lovefilm internet TV service this will all change if they make Sky Atlantic content available to all.

I've been keeping my eye on this since they anounced it. Depending on prices and what subscription content is on offer, it could be interesting.
