actually the split is like a mini league, but who ever is in 6th place might not win a game in the last 6 games, and the team who is 7th could win all of their games, which means that the team in 7th place could have more points than the team in 6th place, in fact depending on the points at the time, other positions could still be higher in points than the team in 6th, but still be below 6th place..........
confusing......
which is why most scottish football fans, don't see the point in it, it was a way to make more old firm matches being played to generat more money, as far as I se it

Oh yes, believe me Teesside is celebrating!!!!
Whilst I love Middlesbrough, I will be the first to admit they suffer inconsistency problems, however this season has been a gian killing one,
Man utd
Arsenal
Chelsea
Roma
Basle

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
Re: the split.
Before the SPL was increased from 10 to 12 teams they played each other 4 times.
9x4=36 games played. (cf with EPL (38) and EFL (46))
Of course increasing the number of teams increases the number of games.
> 11x4=44 games. Not as much as the EFL but considered too much considering sides have Euro games, international players and longer cup runs to factor in.
> 11x2=22games. Nowhere near enough.
> 11x3=33 games. Would favour the side playing at home twice so not fair test.
So ... they adopted the Swiss/Croatian system. 3x (33 games) then the league splits in half and the remaining six teams in each half play each other. I believe H/A is allocated on the basis of 2H 2A but i could be wrong.
33 pre-split + 5 post-split = 38
And yes, 7th invariably ends up with more pts than 6th.

Yep. It always gives the tinfoil hat brigades on both sides of the old firm some ammunition for proving the SFA/SPL/Referees/Media are against Rangers/Celtic/everyone playing Rangers/Everyone playing Celtic.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
Hopefully the ammers' can do united a favour tomorrow by beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but I have my reservations about that.
United will have to be in good form to beat an in-form Arsenal side.
I have a feeling the points gap at the top of the prem come 6pm tomorrow will still be 7 points or greater, I hope I am wrong.

I can't see anyone beating Chelsea at Stamford bridge this season.

You're forgetting Arsenal's abysmal away record which has seen them end up as this season's also-rans?
