I wouldn't write them off for a top 3 finish just yet.
Lets face it they have plenty of experience of coming in from behind.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
don't want to take anything away from Arsenal as you can only beat the team you are playing but they were against a very very poor aging side.. Zidane had no skill whatsoever.. he never had much pace even when he was younger but now he has no pace and no skill he just couldn't do anything.. Beckham also isn;t very young anymore and Ronaldo is looking fat and past it too.. most of the team is over 30 and they had no idea what to do it was just 30 or 40 yard passes.. ok one or two worked but for most of the 90 mins over both games they didn't have a clue what to do
playing against a team like that 1-0 isn't that great a result

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
I've posted this in the 'Champions League Quarter Final Draw' thread, but I'll put it here as well
Just as a by-the-by, UEFA have confirmed that, if Arsenal win the Champions League, they will automatically be entered into the group stages of next seasons competition, in place of whatever team finishes fourth in the Premiership.
What price Arsenal doing it, and knocking Spurs into the UEFA Cup
Right - Quarter final draw is:
Arsenal v Juventus (won't it be funny if they knock Vieira out )
Lyon v AC Milan
Inter or Ajax v Villareal
Benfica v Barca
There you go (Inter & Ajax are due to play their second leg on the 16th March).
And the semi finals will be:
Arsenal or Juventus v Internazionale / Ajax or Villarreal
Lyon or AC Milan v Benfica or Barcelona

AC? You do realise that Juve have a 10 point lead over AC in Serie A?

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
real madrid are a shadow of their previous team for sure.
zidane had a great pass to him in the box but he miscontrolled and would never have done that 2 years ago, he also had many misplaced passes.
beckham who previously was arguably the best crosser of the ball in the world had at least half a dozen crosses either go out of play or simply just overhit, his passing wasnt great and also he had a lot of goal scoring oppirtunities over both legs and blundered them all.
roberto carlos I still think is a great player, along with raul and ronaldo, their robinho doesnt seem so hot and they should have kept owen.
I think for the future they have some good young players like the left back who is behind beckham and woodgate, but they have a severe problem that they keep players in the team simply for marketing purposes and both zidane and beckham need to be dropped. Beckham as a result may up his game but I think zidane is simply past the point of no return.

I know we have probably had enough of conspiracy theorists for the moment, but bear with me...
That black Arsenal defender who two-footed tackled that Liverpool player and then faked an injury to avoid being sent off

Why didn't the ref ask this linesman if he saw what happened with Alonso instead of guessing. They are supposed to be "Assistant referees" after all.
Shades of Euro 2004 there with Gerrard and Henry.

Just seen it on match of the day.
Kolo Toure doing his Bob Beamon impression. And I feel sorry for Alonso, the bloke slipped and got a second yellow for it and subsequently got sent off
